The Rivulus.htm are informally grouped here chiefly because mainly due to a geographic affiliation and a loose similarity in reproductive behavior and aquarium care (The Mangrove Rivulus being a well known exception).

Key Genera

  • Kryptolebias
  • Fundulus
  • Rivulus

General Distribution

Fundulus: turquoise

Rivulus & Kryptolebias: red

Aquarium Care  & Breeding (generalized)

The genus Fundulus occurs in temperate regions of North America, through America, the genus Rivulus is mainly of sub-tropical & of tropical origin, so care and housing is hard to characterize with a single generalization. Obviously the Fundulus species native to the Great Lake and northern Mississippi drainages can withstand cold temperatures, while some Rivulus demand similar temperatures to those of tropical aquarium fishes. Many are determined jumpers and will require adequate cover. Water parameters are variable, and with such a broad sweep of species involved here, conditions could range from "marginal quality" to demanding.

Feeding: As with any killifish, the addition of live foods is beneficial if you want the fish to develop into "show quality" specimens and achieve peak breeding condition (which will likewise have a direct affect on your breeding success/failure). Chopped earthworms, white-worms, grindals are all accepted, but shouldn’t constitute the bulk of the diet. Instead; offer terrestrial insects or aquatic larvae (bloodworms, mosquito, flies, et.) as the larger percentage of live foods offered (note the upward positioning of the mouth opening in these killifish)
